Types of Concrete Foundations

As a New Orleans concrete slab contractor, we clearly understand how crucial the foundation of a home or building is to the value and safety of your structure. Our crew can construct your foundation correctly in terms of:

  • Foundation being formed.
  • Avoiding problems with settlement.
  • Proper preparation of the sub-grade through final curing stages
  • Strict adherence to necessary components and requirements for each phase of foundation construction.

The three types of concrete foundations that we build depend on the purpose of the concrete slab. Here are the three general types we construct in New Orleans:

T-Shaped foundation

In areas where the ground freezes for an extended time, we use this traditional foundation method to support your structure. The steps we follow in this construction are:

  • Placing a T-shaped footing below the frost line which is wider than the wall to provide extra support at the base of the foundation
  • Proper curing for the footing
  • Construction of walls
  • Pouring the slab between the walls

Slab-on-grade foundation

We specialize in creating concrete slabs for foundations which is a single layer of concrete that is several inches thick. This method is used in areas where the ground does not freeze and done through the following steps:

  • Pouring the slab that is thicker at the edges to form an integral footing
  • Using reinforcing rods to strengthen the thickened edge
  • Resting the slab on a bed of crushed gravel to improve drainage
  • Casting a wire mesh in the concrete to reduce the chance of cracking
  • Insulating (if needed and requested) to prevent the slab from being affected by the frost heaves

Frost Protected

If you have a heated structure in New Orleans, we can use this method to construct your concrete foundation. We use two sheets of rigid, polystyrene insulation-one on the outside of the foundation wall and the other laid flat on a bed of gravel at the base of the wall.

This will prevent freezing as the insulation holds heat from the structure in the ground under the footings and prevents heat loss from the edge of the slabs. The heat will maintain the ground temperature around the footings above freezing.

Building High-Quality Concrete Slabs in New Orleans

Big Easy Concrete Slab Foundation ServiceA concrete slab is a common structural element of modern buildings these days. It consists of a flat, horizontal surface made of cast concrete. We build concrete slabs that are used to support any residential or commercial structure that you have like a patio, furniture, walkway, and many others. We also build steel-reinforced concrete slabs that are most often used to construct floors and ceilings.

The slabs we make serve a wide range of purposes and support requirements hence, we follow strict construction variables before placing them for the purpose they are made. The variables include:

  • Efficient planning.

  • Making sure all elements that are required in producing a high-quality slab are done in time (before the concrete sets) and done correctly.
  • Using the right finishing tools.
  • Starting bull floating and final trowelling at the right time to prevent dusting, scaling, and craze cracking of the slab.
  • Precise leveling of the concrete to prevent expensive shimming or cutting of framing.
  • Keeping the water-cement ratio above 0.50 to prevent water permeation, loosening of vinyl flooring adhesives, mold or mildew formation under vinyl, yellowing of vinyl, and other flooring problems.
  • Using air entrainment in the mix in cold weather climates to prevent freezing water in the concrete to expand.
Proper spacing and placement of control joints to prevent the development of unsightly cracks.
  • Using blocks to support wire mesh in the slab or fibers in the concrete mix to maintain the integrity of the concrete slab.
  • Properly compacting the subgrade to provide a firm and stable base for the concrete slab to prevent serious slab settlement, collapsing, and cracking problems for slabs placed on poor subsoil or exposed to heavy traffic conditions.
  • Proper curing to delay the drying shrinkage until the concrete is strong enough to resist shrinkage cracking. We cure moist concrete for 7 days to make sure that it is about 50% stronger than concrete exposed to dry air for the same period.
